Tribute to Duke Gavro Vukovic
Gavro Vuković
Montenegro’s Minister of Foreign Affairs (1899-1905)
The Summer School pays tribute to the history and tradition as it bears the name of Duke Gavro Vuković. Duke Gavro Vuković was the Foreign Minister of the Principality of Montenegro from October 1899 to December 1905. His time as a Foreign Minister is a distinctive era in Montenegrin foreign policy. Duke Gavro Vuković is one of the most significant political figures in modern history of Montenegro. Thanks to his skills, specific methods and the achievements made, he became not only the great name of Montenegrin diplomacy at the time of its independence, but also an embodiment of Montenegrin diplomacy as such.
The worst thing that can befall a small country is a one-sided diplomacy blind for its pragmatic goals and guided by political, ethnic and confessional romanticism.
One should never become enslaved by the relations between states as once set… such relations need to be reconsidered, maintained, weighed, reassessed or modified to adapt to actual circumstances, not any historic sentiments, myths, or illusions of whatsoever kind.
